Saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban today on the IMAX at Mall of Georgia. Sweet Jesus, that was awesome!!! When a 6-story tall dementor is staring down at you, you better believe the goose bumps will come out in droves.
The movie is the bare-bones version of the book. It trims off all of the fat and just gives you the story points you need to know. Yes, it would have been nice to see more of Hogsmeade (like Zonko's joke shop), and I guess it would have helped to explain exactly how Sirius escaped from Azkaban...but in the end, it doesn't really have any relevance as far as Harry is concerned. The movie looks ten times better than the previous two and has a much darker feel to it. Overall, I really prefer the dark and dirty version of Hogwarts in this film. Two thumbs up.
The next kiddy book-turned-movie I await with eager anticipation is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. (See the trailer here.) The books are some of the best children's literature I've read in a long time, and the movie look very faithful to the mood and general feel of the books. Jim Carrey was the perfect choice for Count Olaf.
Speaking of trailers to anticipated films, here's the trailer for what should easily be the most contraversial film of the year - Fahrenheit 9/11.
