Scariest. Scene. Ever.

Finally, a movie list put together by people who know what the hell they're talking about!!!

RetroCrush, which is a great site for anyone who lived through the 70's and 80's, has posted a list of what they believe are the 100 scariest moments in film history. I have to agree withmost of the choices. The scenes that they have selected are the scenes that most everyone remembers from their childhood, not what some film historian or critic would choose. I'm glad to see that they have chosen several scenes from non-horror films, as well.

There will probably be some debate over their choices for the top 3 spots. Personally, I have to agree with their number one choice. While not the most frightening scene by today's standards, it has had a long lasting impact on my fragile nerves while showering.

What would you consider to be the scariest moment in a movie you've seen?

Another R.I.P.

Rod Roddy, announcer of "The Price is Right" for 17 years, passed away yesterday after a long battle with cancer. He was 66 years old. I had always dreamed of the day when I might here him say "Zip Rampy, COME ON DOWN!!!" Alas, it was not meant to be. He will be missed.

R.I.P.

Jack Elam, one of the coolest character actors ever, passed away Monday at his home in Oregon at the age of 84. He is best known for playing villains and drunks in westerns, but I will always remember him from the Twilight Zone episode "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?" as well as Doctor Nikolas Van Helsing in the Cannonball Run films.

Making the Banned

As you probably know by now, the MPAA has decided to ban movie screeners being sent to Academy members. Movie studios have been sending screener copies of movies they want to push for Academy Award consideration to the members of the Academy for years. It's the best way they have to make sure that all of the movies eligible for the awards (studio or independant) are seen by the right people.

Suddenly, about three weeks ago, the MPAA decided that this practice only adds to (or possibly worsens) the rampant act of movie piracy and must be stopped immediately. The major studios agree with the ban because they claim that they are hit hardest by piracy (more). The independant studios/film makers say that sending screeners to Academy members is the only guarantee they have that their movie will be seen/considered, so banning screeners will lead to their movies never being considered for nomination (more). This is where the issue has stood for the past two weeks.

Now, completely out of the blue, in a stand against the MPAA and a big "up yours" to the major studios, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association has decided to cancel their awards ceremony this year in protest of the screener ban. Read here for more.

So what do you think? Do screeners aid in movie piracy or are they important for ensuring that indepedant films get their fair shot? Is their maybe a deeper motivation for the MPAA wanting to ban screeners? What gives?

Kickin' It Old School...Cause It's Necessary!

The web site WildBrain.com is the home of an award-winning animation studio that develops and produces content for the global film, TV, and interactive markets, as well as the top U.S. producer in the animated commercials sector. That's all well and good for them. But the site is nothing like it used to be.

The original site was a place for web animators to display their handiwork (when no other sites would). You could view an entire series of original and extremely creative shows, like Joe Paradise (a noir detective story) or S.I.D. - Space is Dum (a zany space comedy). Unfortunately, all of the commercial success has taken the place of the original content. You can still catch a clip or two of some of the original stuff, but you can't find the entire series of any of the original shows they used to have...until now.

Fortunately, through the grace of the Internet Gods, the lead animator for Space is Dum has collected all of the episodes of the show onto his website. WEEE! Finally, we can thrill to the adventures of Dude and Larry. Dude is the main character, and he's been trapped in space by an evil conglomerate. Larry is his gutter-punk space eel friend. Together, they fight the forces of boredom and space madness with heavy drinking and reruns of their favorite show 'Super Suzie, Rocker Chick'. And now, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you...Space is Dum. Go watch all of the episodes. NOW!
