It's going to take a lot longer than I thought to get these pictures ready for viewing. I swear that they will be up as soon as I get them ready. Until then, enjoy this pic of me getting a nice piece of ice:
This is an actual chunk of ice from a huge field of iceburgs though which we took a guided boat tour. The iceburgs are coming from the Columbia Glacier, which has broken from its perch at the top of its mountain and is quickly advancing towards Prince William Sound. It is the last known glacier to do so. Click on the thumbnail below to get a feel of how big this ice field is:
See the mountain in the background? That's where the glacier is coming from. If you look closely around the base of the mountain, you can see where the glacier flows into the bay. Now, here's the part that will sizzle your sausage...from the point where I am standing to the point where the glacier hits the water is a total distance of 8 miles!!! That's EIGHT FULL MILES OF ICE you are looking at. Crazy, ain't it?
I should have some photos up within the next day or so. PREPARE!!!!!
Forty eight hours from now, I'll be doing my final checks of the luggage and loading everything into the car. Then it's a 2 minute drive over to the Kmart parking lot for unloading the car and loading up on the bus. An hour and a half trip down I-75 (and eventually I-85) to the Atlanta Airp....Hartsfield Interna....Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. One ticket exhange and a couple of security checks later, 21 people from Calhoun, GA, (including my grandmother and I) will be on their way to Alaska for 10 days.
That's right, kiddies. Your truly will be spending time in the 49th state of our great nation. We are going to see some glaciers and icebergs, some bears and caribou at the Denali National Park and Preserve, Mt. McKinley (the highest mountain in North America), and the Alaskan Pipeline. I was hoping to see the aurora borealis, but it's really only viewable in the winter months. :(
All-in-all, I think we'll have a scrumdidilyumptious time. I should be back sometime around the 23rd or 24th, and I'll have plenty of pictures. Until then, my good, sweet little children...here is a lesson in Mnemonics. Enjoy!
So, the first thing I do this morning is hop on the internet and check out CNN. This is not something I normally do. I browsed through the Entertainment section, and there it was - Best. Headline. Ever.
The calm, peaceful life of Leatherface
What a great way to start the day.
ABC will run the final 4 episodes of Kingdom Hospital as three one-hour episodes and one 2-hour episode. Episode 10 is called "The Passion of Reverend Jimmy" by Tabitha King and Stephen King. Episode 11 is called "Seizure Day" by Richard Dooling. Episode 12 is called "Shoulda' Stood in Bed" by Stephen King and the last episode which is 2 hours is called "Finale" by Stephen King. All are directed by Craig Baxley and they will run on consecutive Thursdays beginning June 24th.
Saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban today on the IMAX at Mall of Georgia. Sweet Jesus, that was awesome!!! When a 6-story tall dementor is staring down at you, you better believe the goose bumps will come out in droves.
The movie is the bare-bones version of the book. It trims off all of the fat and just gives you the story points you need to know. Yes, it would have been nice to see more of Hogsmeade (like Zonko's joke shop), and I guess it would have helped to explain exactly how Sirius escaped from Azkaban...but in the end, it doesn't really have any relevance as far as Harry is concerned. The movie looks ten times better than the previous two and has a much darker feel to it. Overall, I really prefer the dark and dirty version of Hogwarts in this film. Two thumbs up.
The next kiddy book-turned-movie I await with eager anticipation is Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. (See the trailer here.) The books are some of the best children's literature I've read in a long time, and the movie look very faithful to the mood and general feel of the books. Jim Carrey was the perfect choice for Count Olaf.
Speaking of trailers to anticipated films, here's the trailer for what should easily be the most contraversial film of the year - Fahrenheit 9/11.
